The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is back!
Over a decade after mobilizing millions of people worldwide, the ALS Ice Bucket challenge is back, raising awareness and funds to support touched by families to fuel research.
The Impact of Quebec’s Support in 2014
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge became a global phenomenon in 2014. Millions of people poured ice water over their heads, shared their videos, and donated to raise awareness, support families, and fund research.
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge greatly contributed to informing the public about the disease in ways that were as unexpected as they were impressive.
- Over 260,000 Canadians took part in 2014
- More than $2.67 million was raised in Quebec
- 70% of funds went to research and matched by the Brain Canada Foundation; 30% went to direct support for people living with ALS and their loved ones in Quebec
How does the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge work?
It’s simple: fill a bucket with ice water, pour it over your head, film it, and share the video on social media. Then challenge three people to do the same and encourage them to donate.
12 years of progress in ALS research
Since 2014, major advances have been made, but there is still no cure for ALS.
In Canada, QALSODY (tofersen) became the first approved therapy targeting a specific genetic cause of ALS, for adults with a pathogenic SOD1 gene variant. Health Canada’s 2025 approval marks an important step forward, though access and reimbursement remain challenges for the community.
Many other clinical trials are underway or in development in Quebec and around the world.
Thanks to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, ALS Quebec expanded its program and services across the province.
