Volunteering and ALS: Claudiane's Story | ALS Quebec

Claudiane Marc-Aurèle’s story

In 2022, Claudiane learned that her father had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This diagnosis deeply disrupted the life of her entire family. She shares that from the start, ALS Quebec became an essential pillar—offering support, resources, and a reassuring presence along a journey that was as demanding as it was unpredictable. Her father lived with ALS for two years.

Having gone through these difficult times, Claudiane felt the need to take action and help other families who are going through the same experience. She decided to volunteer.

ALS Quebec was an invaluable source of support for my family throughout my father’s journey. I felt the need to give back in return,” she explains.

Since 2024, volunteering at the ALS Quebec Walk has come naturally to Claudiane. Among all the events, the Sainte‑Adèle ALS Quebec Walk holds a special place in her heart: it was the last activity she shared with her father. Taking part each year has become much more than a volunteer gesture—it is a continuation of their bond, a moment to remember and honour his memory.

Getting involved with ALS Quebec: when volunteering becomes a community

For Claudiane, getting involved with ALS Quebec goes far beyond simply giving time. Above all, it is about human connections—a space for sharing and mutual understanding.

Volunteering for ALS Quebec allows me to meet people who are living or have lived through the same reality as I have, and to share meaningful moments with them. This sense of belonging to a close-knit community gives me the strength to bring meaning to a disease that, too often, has none.”

These connections, formed throughout the events, become a source of support and hope.

Together, volunteers, loved ones, and those affected who take part in the events break isolation and transform solitude into solidarity.

Moments that leave a mark and bring people together

She tells us that during the events, it is the looks in people’s eyes that touch her the most—the radiant smiles, the silent embraces, and sometimes the shared tears.

“These moments remind me that we are all united for the same purpose. They ground me in the present: creating memories with those around me, just as I did with my dad.”

Each ALS Quebec Walk becomes a space for remembrance, and a place where resilience, kindness, and the importance of togetherness are celebrated.

A message from Claudiane to families affected by ALS

“To all the people and families going through this difficult time: you are not alone. There is an entire community ready to walk alongside you—both literally and symbolically. Allow yourselves to accept this support, to share your moments, and to find, even on the most difficult days, small moments of comfort to hold on to.”

Through this story, we wish to highlight the importance of volunteering and recognize the invaluable commitment of all those who give their time, energy, and heart. Their involvement transforms lived experience into a collective force that fuels hope.

Thank you to all our volunteers for being part of our team.
