About Lou Gehrig
On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig, one of baseball’s greatest players of all time, stood in front of a crowd of 62,000 fans at Yankee Stadium and gave one of the most memorable speeches in sports history.
He died on June 2nd, 1941, before celebrating his 38th birthday, of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), now known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Today, the cause is still unknown; there is still no cure nor effective treatment.
Lou Gehrig remains an inspiration and a source of strength, humility and courage for the thousands of Quebecers and Canadians affected by ALS.
In 2021, Major League Baseball announced that June 2nd will henceforth be known as “Lou Gehrig Day”. An annual, league-wide event that will not only honour and celebrate the legacy of the Hall of Fame first baseman but also raise awareness and funds for research.
- June 2nd was chosen because it marks both the day Lou Gehrig became the New York Yankees’ starting first baseman in 1925 and the day of his death in 1941.
- June is also ALS Awareness Month in Canada.
