Rediscovering the simple joy of camping
During summers in Quebec, there are times when the call of nature becomes irresistible. Breathing in the fresh air, admiring the colors of the leaves, letting the wind wash over you. Paying attention to the little outdoorsy things that fill us with happiness.
For many, camping is not just an activity, but a way to rejuvenate. It is a moment to really be present.
That was exactly what Alain Marotte, 66, diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), wished for.
Outdoor enthusiast and avid camper since he was little, Alain used to be a Scout leader, and his passion never left. Since forever, summer is synonymous with camping, an activity that brings him pure happiness, absolute well-being, and peace of mind. Every year, he would go camping in Baie Saint-Paul, in Charlevoix, with his wife and sisters-in-law. Together, they would be lulled by the beauty of the river and unique ambience of the surroundings.
A flame that never fades
But in 2022, Alain’s life was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with ALS. Despite this new reality, he remains resilient and refuses to let the disease prevent him from enjoying what brings him the most joy.
“I want to do everything I can within my capabilities,” he says with determination.

Discovering Seize the Day
It was during a support group in Lorraine that Alain first heard about the Seize the Day initiative. Thanks to the Tenaquip Foundation’s support, people with ALS can fulfill their wish and create special memories. Camping, travel, sporting or festive events—the initiative provides financial support and assistance with the necessary steps to make a wish come true, adapted to each person. Everyone should be able to experience moments filled with joy and happiness with their loved ones.
“I took the opportunity to invite my sisters-in-law, with whom we always used to go camping,” said Alain, grateful to our counsellors who tipped him off and strongly encouraged him to take advantage of this initiative.
Adapted camping and outdoor activities
Alain decided to go camping in Oka National Park along with his wife and two sisters-in-law. An ideal choice, as he could enjoy nature and the waterfront he cherishes so much, while staying close to home and having access to adapted facilities. In addition, he rented a Hoyer lift to make transfers easier and adapt the experience even more to his needs.
This trip also had a deeply human touch. Surrounded by his wife and sisters-in-law, his true “guardian angels” as he calls them, Alain rediscovered the joy that comes from sharing these moments together. The lively atmosphere of the campers, the excitement of the beach, and quality time with loved ones allowed him to fully reconnect.
“Hearing people having fun around me makes me happy,” Alain told us, a heartfelt smile on his face.
More than camping
When we asked him to describe his experience in a few words, he replied without hesitation: “Extraordinary and happiness.”
With the Seize the Day initiative, Alain was able to continue living his passion despite the challenges of ALS. His story is a reminder that with support, adaptation, and plenty of love, nature remains accessible to everyone and retains its healing power.
