Get involved as a volunteer and support the ALS cause | ALS Quebec

On December 5, for International Volunteer Day, ALS Quebec wishes to recognize the exceptional commitment of all those who give their time to support families affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Volunteering is not just an act of generosity—it is a deeply human gesture that gives meaning, transforms lives, and strengthens the entire community.

Today, we want to highlight what volunteering brings both to the ALS community and to those who get involved.

A commitment that enriches life—yours as much as others’

Being a volunteer is an opportunity to discover a rich human experience, full of learning and emotion.  Beyond the essential support provided to people living with ALS and their loved ones, every volunteer gains something precious:

  • a sense of accomplishment;
  • the joy of contributing to a meaningful cause;
  • the privilege of making a real difference in someone’s life;
  • the pride of participating in a collective mission.

Every action count, whether big or small. Each contribution helps build a more empathetic, supportive, and informed community.

Creating connections, building relationships

Volunteering with ALS Quebec also means joining a warm and inspiring human network.
 Volunteers meet other engaged individuals, families affected by the disease, and professionals dedicated to the cause.

They share unique moments, and sometimes lasting friendships are formed. These exchanges foster a deep understanding of the daily lives of people living with ALS—an experience that develops empathy, solidarity, and listening skills.

Giving meaning to your time and actions

Being a volunteer is not just about “helping.” It’s about actively participating in a mission: supporting families, raising public awareness, and advancing the cause of ALS.

Every call, every presence, every administrative or logistical contribution strengthens the foundations of a valuable support ecosystem for families.

Getting involved also means meeting people who share your values, discovering stories of courage and resilience, and contributing to building a more inclusive and caring society.

It is with great emotion and determination that I am joining the organizing committee for the Saint-Hyacinthe Walk to End ALS this year. I lost my father in April 2024, shortly after he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This experience made me realize the full impact of this devastating disease, as well as the crucial importance of research, support for those affected, and guidance for their loved ones.

Developing skills: an often-underestimated benefit

Volunteering is also about learning, growing, and developing new skills. ALS Quebec offers a wide variety of roles, adapted to everyone’s interests, availability, and abilities.
