About Lou Gehrig

On July 4th, 1939, Lou Gehrig, one of baseball’s greatest players of all time stood in front of a crowd of 62,000 fans at Yankee’s Stadium and gave one of the most memorable speeches in sports history.

He died on June 2nd, 1941, two years after, just a few days before celebrating his 38th birthday, of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, now known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. 80 years later, the cause is still unknown, there is still no cure nor effective treatment. .Today, Gehrig remains an inspiration, a source of strength, humility and courage for the thousands of Canadians affected by ALS.

Last March, Major League Baseball announced that June 2nd will hereby be known as “Lou Gehrig Day,”. An annual, league-wide event will not only to honor and celebrate the legacy of the Hall of Fame first baseman but to raise awareness and funds to fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). June is also ALS Awareness Month in Canada.
