This year marks the 10th anniversary of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. This challenge, which began as a simple gesture of solidarity, quickly became a viral and global phenomenon that encouraged millions of people to pour a bucket of ice water over themselves.

In 2014, over 260,000 Canadians took part. In Quebec, over $2.6 million was raised, of which 70% was invested in research (and matched by the Brain Canada Foundation), while the remaining 30% was used to provide community support services to those living with ALS.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge greatly contributed to informing the public about the disease in ways that were as unexpected as they were impressive. Our reach rate is currently 91%, which means we support an average of 554 of the 609 people with ALS at any given time each year. Ten years ago, we were at 354.

Its success enabled ALS Quebec to broaden its support for Quebec families, including through webinars, support groups, children’s programs, educational tools, collaborations with health care professional, to name a few.

Ice Bucket Challenge – 10 years later

For this 10th anniversary celebration of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, ALS Quebec invites the public to reshare their participation in the 2014 challenge on social media or to take part in the challenge.

The Ice Bucket Challenge sparked a momentum of historic importance, and ALS Quebec joins the global movement, encouraging people to keep that momentum going. Many have already started to join the movement. Will you be joining them?
