Quebec has all the required elements to become a world leader in organ and tissue donation but is unaware of half of its potential. This presentation will reveal the true potential donors have and where Quebec is positioned in comparison to the rest of the world. What are the constraints that prevent tissue and organ donation from happening? Who can donate their organs and how do you proceed? How do you approach a family to give them the option of donating organs and tissue? Lastly, families of donors have certain needs that are not perceived. How does Dr. Marsolais’ Mission plan to support donors?

Throughout the course of this presentation, participants will learn about the following:

• Who can donate organs and tissues;
• What can be transplanted and how many people will be able to benefit;
• How to proceed with organs and tissue donations;
• How the family will be supported during and after the process of organ and tissue donation.

A question period will follow the presentation.

About Dr. Pierre Marsolais 

Dr Pierre Marsolais , Md, FRCPC is an intensivist internist at the CIUSSS de Nord-de-l’Île de Montréal. He is also the Associate Professor of clinical medicine at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal. In 1984, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Sherbrooke and a diploma from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal in 1990. He went on to receive a diploma in Internal Medicine in 1994 from the University of Montreal with another in Intensive Care from the University of Calgary and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1995. He began practicing medicine in 1995 at the Sacré-Coeur Hospital in Montreal in internal medicine and intensive care. He has received the following rewards and prizes: – Outstanding professor of the year in 1999 for the Department of Medicine at University of Montreal. – Honorary prizes in 2004 (San Diego), in 2005 (Pittsburgh , in 2007 (New Orleans) and 2008 (Nashville) for organ donation. – Best practices in organ donation awarded by Accreditation Canada in 2004, 2007 and 2014. – Honorary recipient from Transplant Québec in 2006 and in 2010 for his devotion in organ donation. – Outstanding profession of the year awarded by first year med students at the University of Montreal in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2017 – Award recipient for the AQESSS in 2014 in the leadership category for his excellent work and commitment in organ donation in Quebec – AQESSS Physician Leadership Award in 2014 and the Persillier-Lachapelle Career Recognition Award from the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services in the same year. – In 2017 he was also awarded the Humanist Award from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Dr. Marsolais also created the Regional Center for Organ Removal at Sacré-Coeur Hospital in Montreal along with founding his own charitable organization called The Mission of Dr. Marsolais.
